Uceris® (Budesonide): Targeted Therapy for Ulcerative Colitis Relief

What Is Uceris®?

Uceris® is a brand-name formulation of budesonide, a corticosteroid used to treat mild-to-moderate active ulcerative colitis (UC). What sets Uceris apart is its unique, targeted release mechanism that delivers medication directly to the colon where inflammation occurs—reducing systemic side effects compared to traditional corticosteroids.

Approved by the FDA, Uceris is often prescribed to manage flares and maintain remission for UC patients, offering symptom relief without the widespread immune suppression seen in older steroid therapies.

How Does Uceris Work?

Uceris is formulated using MMX® technology, which ensures the drug releases gradually as it travels through the colon. This allows for local anti-inflammatory action at the site of disease, improving efficacy and tolerability. Its high first-pass metabolism means most of the drug is deactivated by the liver before reaching the bloodstream, significantly reducing systemic exposure.

At King’s Pharmacy and Compounding Center, our pharmacists work closely with gastroenterologists to support patients taking Uceris or who require budesonide compounded alternatives based on dosage, delivery needs, or tolerability.

“Uceris delivers corticosteroid power where it’s needed most—in the colon, not the bloodstream.”

When Is Uceris Used?

  • Treating mild to moderate active ulcerative colitis
  • Inducing remission in UC patients with frequent flare-ups
  • As part of combination therapy with aminosalicylates or immunomodulators

While Uceris is not typically used for long-term maintenance, it plays a vital role in calming active inflammation during UC flare cycles.

FAQs About Uceris®

Uceris is usually taken orally as an 8 mg extended-release tablet once daily in the morning. Always follow your provider’s instructions closely.

Many patients report symptom relief within 5–10 days. Full remission may take several weeks of continuous therapy.

Because of its targeted action, side effects are less common but may include headache, nausea, or mild adrenal suppression.

In some cases, budesonide can be compounded for patients who require alternate delivery forms, such as enemas or rectal suspensions.
